There are many things you can do to make sure your UK car insurance doesn’t cost you the earth. Use our quick tips guide below to get you onto the right path for saving money on your car insurance.

Buy a smaller car - less powerful engines lower your insurance premium

No imported cars - Insurers may raise your premium if your car is imported

Don’t modify your car – modifications made to cars, for example supercharging the engine, will raise your insurance premium

Protect your car – the more secure your car is the lower your premium will be

Value your car correctly – over/undervaluing your car can affect your premium

Be a careful driver – Dont take risks. Less speeding tickets mean lower insurance premium

Take the Pass Plus test – The Pass Plus course is great proof of increased driving proficiency. You can get substantial discounts on your car insurance and so this is well worthwhile

Be a woman – Women are considered more careful drivers. Sorry guys.

But hold on, add a woman to your policy – if you’re a man, adding a female partner to your car insurance policy can reduce your premium

Which job? – Your job can greatly affect your premium, so choose wisely if you have two jobs.

Annual mileage – if you guess your mileage and overestimate you will have a higher premium.

Less named drivers – Fewer drivers on your policy mean lower premiums

Volunteer excess – voluntary excess (usually £50-£500) will give you a discount on your insurance premium because you are agreeing to pay a certain amount when you make a claim

No claims bonus – get the amount right and provide proof

Honesty works – You wont save money by being honest but at least you wont be blacklisted by car insurance companies in the future
