Lenders use your credit report when deciding whether to make you an offer and what interest to charge you on that offer. Checking your credit report could save you money when applying for a loan, mortgage or credit card. It is important to manage what’s on your credit report, making sure information it contains is up to date and accurately reflects your situation.
What is the National Credit Score?
Your National Credit Score is a credit rating based on the information in your credit report. It is a number between zero and 1,000. A higher score suggests that you will probably find it easier to borrow money or buy goods on credit and may be offered better deals than if you have a low credit score.
Your National Credit Score will not be the same as the credit scores calculated by lenders when you apply for credit, such as a loan, mortgage or card, because they use information from other sources as well. These could include your application form and their past experience of you, as well as your credit report. Lenders also use unique calculations to arrive at a score - they may even use different formulae for different products.
Your National Credit Score demonstrates the impact that your credit history can have on a lender's decision. It is not a guarantee that you will, or won't, be granted credit.

Why have I not seen my National Credit Score before?
Experian carried out extensive consumer research and discovered that people wanted to know more about credit scores and how they could be improved. They developed the National Credit Score, so that individuals could see the role their credit report can play in the credit scores calculated by individual lenders.
The National Credit Score is the first service from a UK credit agency to give people this opportunity and was created in response to significant consumer demand.
Does everyone have a National Credit Score?
Yes - if you are over 18, registered on the electoral roll and have a credit history
